Research calculates the cost for each student who drops out of high school to be $250,000 – A QUARTER OF A MILLION DOLLARS.  That is the estimated dollar-amount of the social services - food stamps, AFDC, government-subsidized housing, etc. – that each student who drops out of high school will cost our nation.  Without a high school diploma, a young person will more likely have a low-wage job – or possibly no job at all – and contribute little or nothing to our tax-base.  All the while, utilizing tax-funded services.

Far too many students drop out, even this far into the school year.  The finish line is in sight, but unfortunately there will be students who will give up and drop out, even during their senior year.  Surrounding  students with care and support may be all they need to finish.  Presently, Touchstone is serving 20 high school seniors.  Let’s do the math.  Based on the statistic that – $250,000 for every dropout – those 20 seniors could cost taxpayers $5 MILLION if they don’t graduate. 

There are many reasons why a young person drops out.  The students we serve have endured often-tragic experiences that contributes to their failure in life. Brokenness knows no socio-economic barriers.  Any student is at risk of giving up.  Touchstone’s role is to shore up the weak places in a young person’s life through individual counseling, encouragement, and the support CiViL Groups provides.
